The Effects of Ocean Surface Waves on Tropical Cyclone Intensity: Numerical Simulations Using a Regional Atmosphere‐Ocean‐Wave Coupled Model

چکیده

Tropical cyclones (TCs), especially landfalling intense storms often pose serious threats to life and property in coastal areas. Although TC track forecast skill has been improved the past decades, progress of advancing intensity lags that forecast. One possible limiting factor is absence ocean surface waves systems. To better represent interaction underlying ocean, a regional atmosphere-ocean-wave coupled model employed this study. Twenty-one TCs whole year 2013 are retrospectively simulated through twin simulations, Control Fully run. Results show bias significantly reduced fully simulation, which five wave related physical processes considered, including modulation momentum flux, sea spray effect on enthalpy current Stokes drift air non-breaking induced mixing upper as well rain cooling. A case study approach used diagnose individual process simulations. Similar spray, also act positive feedback intensification by modulating air-sea flux. Absolute angular budget analysis suggests larger radial inflows stronger updrafts near eyewall promote vertical advections absolute turn lead simulation. The structure size agree with observations

Numerical Simulations of Tropical Cyclone-Ocean Interaction With a High-Resolution Coupled Model

The tropical cyclone-ocean interaction was investigated using a high-resolution tropical cyclone ocean coupled model. The model design consisted of the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory tropical cyclone prediction model which was coupled with a multilayer primitive equation ocean model. Coupling between the hurricane and the ocean models was carried out by passing into the ocean model ...

The Effect of the Ocean Eddy on Tropical Cyclone Intensity

It has been widely recognized that the ocean supplies surface heat fluxes and therefore energy to tropical cyclones (TCs). The TC can induce the sea surface temperature (SST) cooling (Price 1981) associated with both the entrainment/mixing and upwelling processes. In turn, the SST cooling near the storm core exerts influence on the TC intensity. This negative feedback to the TC intensity is cle...

Effects of Relative and Absolute Sea Surface Temperature on Tropical Cyclone Potential Intensity Using a Single-Column Model

The effects of relative and absolute sea surface temperature (SST) on tropical cyclone potential intensity are investigated using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) single-column model. The model is run in two modes: (i) radiative–convective equilibrium (RCE) to represent the convective response to uniform warming of the ocean as in a homogeneous aqua planet, and (ii) weak temperat...

Stable Boundary Layer and Its Impact on Tropical Cyclone Structure in a Coupled Atmosphere–Ocean Model

The atmospheric boundary layer (BL) in tropical cyclones (TCs) connects deep convection within rainbands and the eyewall to the air–sea interface. Although the importance of the BL in TCs has been widely recognized in recent studies, how physical processes affect TC structure and intensity are still not well understood. This study focuses on a particular physical mechanism through which a TC-in...
